Robert Dean Stebbins, MD, treated patients in a private practice in Palo Alto for 20 years. The sole physician, Dr. Stebbins practiced oncology, hematology, and internal medicine for 1,600 individuals annually, with a special interest in treating leukemia and breast cancer. He also oversaw a staff of six professionals and laboratory technicians. During this time, Dr. Robert Dean Stebbins functioned as a Clinical Professor at Stanford University. He won an award for excellence in teaching and acted as a chairman on several committees at the university.

Dr. Robert D. Stebbins served as the Founding President and Chairman of the Board with the Private Physicians Group at Stanford, Inc., for five years. In this role, he organized 250 physicians in private practice who wanted to compete for HMO contracts for a patient pool of 18,000. He led negotiations with doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies. Blue Shield acknowledged his efforts with an award for the best-managed new medical group. Dr. Robert Dean Stebbins was also the Founding Chairman of the Committee on Residency Training and Clinical Service at Stanford. Dr. Robert D. Stebbins oversaw 18 senior physicians and trainees in their review of the residency training program and subsequent allocation of medical services.

Dr. Robert Dean Stebbins began his postsecondary education at Iowa State University. He then attended the University of Southern California (USC) School of Medicine, where he earned his MD in 1967. Afterward, Dr. Stebbins completed an internship residency in internal medicine at USC. He became a Staff Physician in Internal Medicine at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center and then spent a year in hematology research at the Department of Pathology at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He subsequently completed fellowships in hematology at New York University and oncology at Yale University hospitals. Over the course of his career, Dr. Robert D. Stebbins has lent his time to various professional organizations, including the Committee on Voluntary Cost Containment and the Medical Board at Stanford University.
